About the Car Loan EMI Calculator
A car loan helps you buy a new or used vehicle without paying the full price upfront. The loan is secured against the car itself, which keeps interest rates lower than personal loans. Lenders usually finance 80-90% of the on-road price, so you pay the rest as a down payment. A bigger down payment means a smaller loan, a lower EMI and less interest overall, so it is worth stretching your upfront contribution if you can.
The EMI uses the reducing-balance formula EMI = P x r x (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n - 1), where P is the amount financed after your down payment. Car loan tenures typically range from one to seven years. A longer tenure lowers the EMI but you end up paying more interest on a depreciating asset, and you risk owing more than the car is worth if you sell early, so balance affordability against total cost.
Use this calculator to test different down payments and tenures before you visit a dealership, where financing is often bundled into the deal. Knowing your target EMI in advance helps you negotiate on the car price rather than getting distracted by an attractive monthly figure. Remember to include insurance, road tax and processing fees when working out the true cost of ownership.
How to use it
- Make the largest down payment you comfortably can to reduce the loan, the EMI and total interest.
- Compare loans from banks and NBFCs, as rates and processing fees vary widely for the same car.
- Prefer a shorter tenure so you are not paying interest long after the car has depreciated.
- Factor in insurance, road tax, accessories and extended warranty when budgeting the full cost.
