About the Compound Interest Calculator

Compound interest is often called the eighth wonder of finance because it lets your money earn returns not just on the original principal but also on the interest already earned. Over time this creates a snowball effect: the balance grows faster and faster as the interest base keeps expanding. Understanding compounding is fundamental to almost every savings and investment decision, from fixed deposits and PPF to mutual funds and even loans, where it works against you.

This calculator uses the standard formula A = P x (1 + r/n)^(n x t), where P is the principal, r is the annual interest rate, n is the number of times interest is compounded per year and t is the time in years. The more frequently interest compounds, whether yearly, quarterly, monthly or daily, the higher the final amount. It shows both the maturity value and the interest earned, so you can see compounding in action.

The two biggest drivers of compound growth are time and rate. Because the effect is exponential, starting early can matter more than investing a larger amount later. A modest sum left to compound for decades can outgrow a much bigger sum invested for only a few years. Use this tool to appreciate why long-term, patient investing works, and why paying down high-interest debt quickly is so valuable, since the same maths compounds against borrowers.

How to use it

  • More frequent compounding, such as monthly over yearly, produces a higher final amount.
  • Time is the most powerful factor, so starting early beats investing more later.
  • Compounding works against you on loans and credit cards, so clear high-interest debt fast.
  • Small differences in the interest rate compound into large differences over long periods.
