Overview

An education loan puts higher studies within reach for students whose ambitions outrun their family's immediate savings, covering not just tuition but the full cost of an education — examination and library fees, hostel or living expenses, books, a laptop, and for overseas courses, airfare and health cover. Its defining feature is the moratorium: repayment usually begins only after the course ends plus a grace period of six months to a year, so you can focus on studying rather than earning EMIs while enrolled. This makes it fundamentally kinder than an ordinary loan.

Loans split broadly into two buckets. Smaller amounts, often up to around Rs 7.5 lakh, are typically unsecured and may be backed by a government credit-guarantee scheme, while larger loans for premium Indian institutions or foreign universities usually require collateral such as property or a fixed deposit, along with a co-applicant, generally a parent. Interest is often calculated on a simple-interest basis during the moratorium, and lenders frequently offer a small rate concession for prompt servicing of interest while you study. Eligibility considers the student's admission, the institution's ranking and the co-applicant's income.

The financial case is strengthened by tax relief. Under Section 80E, the entire interest paid on an education loan is deductible from taxable income for up to eight years, with no upper cap on the amount of interest — a meaningful saving for larger overseas loans. Choosing the right lender means weighing the rate, the margin money you must contribute, the collateral demanded, processing charges and how forex disbursal is handled for foreign courses. LoanServ helps students and parents compare offers and plan repayment around future earnings.

Key benefits

  • Study now, pay later. A moratorium lets repayment start after the course plus a grace period.
  • Full-cost coverage. Funds tuition, living, books, travel and insurance for Indian and overseas study.
  • Tax deduction on interest. Claim the entire interest under Section 80E for up to eight years.
  • Collateral-free up to a limit. Smaller loans are often unsecured, sometimes under a government guarantee.
  • Long repayment. Stretch repayment over up to 15 years once earnings begin.
  • Rate concessions. Many lenders reward prompt interest servicing and female students with lower rates.

Eligibility criteria

  • Indian-resident student with confirmed admission to a recognised institution in India or abroad.
  • Age typically between 16 and 35 years depending on the course and lender.
  • A co-applicant — usually a parent or guardian — with stable income.
  • Admission secured through merit or an entrance process.
  • Course from a UGC, AICTE or lender-approved institution or a recognised foreign university.
  • Collateral for larger loans, and a good co-applicant credit profile.
  • Satisfactory academic record supporting future repayment ability.

Documents required

  • Admission or offer letter from the institution.
  • Fee structure and course details.
  • Academic records — mark sheets and entrance scorecards.
  • PAN and Aadhaar of the student and co-applicant.
  • Income proof of the co-applicant — salary slips, ITRs or business financials.
  • Last 6 months bank statements of the co-applicant.
  • Collateral documents for secured loans and passport or visa for overseas study.
